The theme for this year’s World Refugee Sunday, "I was in prison and you visited me," reminds us of the harsh reality faced by many refugees today. Having fled their countries to escape persecution and violence, many are then detained in prison-like conditions. The World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) calls on churches around the world to remember their suffering and to take compassionate action to meet their needs.
Prof. Dr. Janet Epp Buckingham, Director of the WEA Geneva Office to the United Nations, invites churches, organizations, and individuals to participate in World Refugee Sunday.
Launched over 15 years ago by the Refugee Highway Partnership in cooperation with the WEA, World Refugee Sunday is a special opportunity for the global church to stand in solidarity with refugees and internally displaced persons through prayer, advocacy, and support.
In 2000, the United Nations General Assembly officially declared June 20 as World Refugee Day, building on Africa’s longstanding Refugee Day and marking the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, a cornerstone of international refugee protection.
This year, World Refugee Sunday will be observed on June 15 and June 22. Churches and communities are encouraged to choose one of these Sundays—or both—to dedicate time to pray, reflect, and take meaningful action on behalf of refugees around the world.
Now more than ever, we are called to be the hands and feet of Christ to those who are displaced, persecuted, and longing for hope.
Join us in lifting up our refugee brothers and sisters in prayer, and standing with them in hope and solidarity.
